Review of The Music Never Stopped (2011) by Steve S — 08 Aug 2011
*** (out of four).
J.K. Simmons lifts this sometimes enthralling and sometimes misguided film that finds redemtion in its steadfast performances and captivating premise.
Gabriel, played by Lou Taylor Pucci, is a young man who finds himself with a brain tumor. When it is removed he loses his memory. His family tries to find ways of reaching him when a therapist finds that his memories can be triggered by the bands he loves like The Beatles and The Grateful Dead.
The flashback scenes are very dopey and simplistic in their delivery, touching on many 1960's era cliches. Where the film works for me is in the later relationship between Gabriel and his father (J.K. Simmons). Simmons gives one of his best performances and is able to lift the entire film to a higher level.
