Review of The Music Lovers (1971) by Linda K — 08 Dec 2007
How to review Ken Russell in a sentence or two? He pushed melodrama to the point of absurd excess, revealing, simultaneously, the comedy and tragedy of his characters' lives.
Although I haven't seen this in years, I watched it many times as a grad student in film studies. It never failed to leave me amused and moved. Through the method of overwrought melodrama, we as audience are forced to distance from the material--the heat of the film turns us into cool observers.
