Review of The Muppets (2011) by Allan C — 09 Jan 2013
The director of "Da Ali G Show" and "Flight of the Conchords" and the writers of the very non-family friendly "Forgetting Sara Marshall" and "Strangers With Candy" somehow got to make a muppet movie and they manage to balance just the right amount of wholesome and subversive humor to make this a a great comedy that can be appreciated on multiple levels. And I loved that the film kind of channeled the first Muppet movie where each of the different muppets was doing something different at the beginning as they get the whole gang back together. And like the other films, there are a bunch of fun celebrity cameos that I don't want to spoil by listing here, but it's a nice cross-section of old and new Hollywood. The muppets, of course, also sing a number of songs, but this time the songs are written by Conchords star Bret McKenzie. I really can't see how anyone could not enjoy this film.
PS: My favorite line in the film was when a network exec. tells Kemit she'll cancel their comeback show if they can't get a celebrity to host, ending the conversation with,"I will rerun 'Benson' if I have to!".
