Review of The Muppet Movie (1979) by Jose P — 26 May 2008
Well, it wasn't quite what I was expecting (based on how John Hodgeman described it in his book), but it's still a suprisingly enjoyable movie. This group of puppets are watching a movie that they made about them getting to Hollywood in order to make the movie, at which point we witness them making the movie we are watching them watch.
Very odd stuff. The comedy goes from lame slapstick to remarkably clever puns, and I laughed all through the film. The music is similarly hit or miss: there are some great little tunes and some really lame ones that don't really contribute to anything, but whatever.
It's very enjoyable for its witty wordplay and most will get a kick out of the plethora of cameos (Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Orson Welles, Milton Berle, and many others).
