Review of The Muppet Movie (1979) by Joshua R — 01 Jan 2009
After making it big on TV, Jim Henson's Muppets made the transition from the small-screen to the big-screen. It's a big step, but they succeed, but only just. The film tells of how the Muppets got together, with Kermit the Frog leaving his swamp to pursue a career in Hollywood, along the way, he meets Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo, Dr.
Teeth and the Electric Mayhem and all the others inbetween. On their tail is evil Frogs Legs restaurant mogul Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), who wants Kermit to be the companies new spokesperson. It's a lightweight story, but it's entertaining while it lasts, it's got good songs written by Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher, and it has a LOAD of celebrity cameos.
They include Mel Brooks, Dom DeLuise, Paul Williams, Madeline Kahn, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, Elliot Gould and Orson Welles as Lew Lord, (based on Lew Grade, who signed up the Muppets when no-one else would).
A fun family film. :).
