Review of The Muppet Movie (1979) by Christopher A — 18 Sep 2009
When I was three, I saw a 35mm print of this film. as I grew up, I saw it so many times on VHS and television. as an adult, it got a few viewings on DVD. last night, I had the chance to see it on 35mm again. beautiful. probably one of the newly-struck prints from 2005, rather than an original, as there was virtually no wear.
THE MUPPET MOVIE is a truly unique and timeless piece - perhaps the greatest "family film" ever made. it grows with the viewer - go out and experience life, study philosophy, observe the way the world works, and come back to the same MUPPET MOVIE that's always been there - it will reward you in altogether new ways.
Jim henson was one of a kind, and this film is as great a testament to that fact as any. nostalgia is often the prime culprit when the cultural touchstones of our youth continue to have resonance into our adulthood, but that's just not the case with THE MUPPET MOVIE. so much is on offer here - to viewers of all ages - that it isn't simply nostalgia that keeps the film fresh and inspiring thirty years after its release.
Keep believing. keep pretending.
