Review of The Mummy's Curse (1944) by Steve M — 15 Jun 2005
The last of Universal's mummy films, and the last time we would see Kharis until Hammer Studios resurrected him in the late fifties. He seems to have migrated from New England to a place further south that is obviously Louisiana, though it is never specifically identified, yet the characters insist that this is the same swamp that Kharis escaped to years ago with his princess as a deputized mob pursued them. It's also curious that they identify the girl as the princess when no one but Kharis and his last keeper knew that she had been reincarnated.
Inconsistancies aside, this film is still better than The Mummy's Tomb, despite a similar and lengthy flashback sequence, better use is made here of the remaininder of the film's running time.
In short, Kharis is dug up by the latest priest to travel to America, but the princess unearths herself and tries to escape. Kharis must find her so that they can return to Egypt. Meanwhile Archeologists pursue them both, not knowing that the princess herself walks among them in an amnesiac state.
I personally prefer The Mummy's Ghost and believe it to be a more fitting ending, but this isn't the worst mummy film.
