Review of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) by Mike J — 15 Aug 2010
Out of all the summer blockbusters I saw this year, The Mummy is, by far, the worst of the bunch. Many reviewers said that they knew the movie wasn't great but it was, at the very least, fun. Well, I'll have to disagree with them there.
The first two were dumb fun, this one lacked charm, logic, character, good writing, good direction and a reason for existing beyond a cash grab. Brendan Fraser tries to make the best out of a bad situation, but lacking anything to work with (the least of which being his co-star-Maria Bello does not a Rachel Weisz make) he's just going through the motions.
John Hannah puts in, perhaps, his most thankless role to date, and there is, as my wife complained about repeatedly, a yak puppet. If the movie followed it's own bizarre inner logic, it might have been better, but even that was ignored by Cohen and the writers.
I'm so glad I didn't pay full price to see this one.
