Review of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) by Ken S — 04 Sep 2011
The Mummy franchise should have just ended. A lot works against this movie. The first problem is one of the passage of time. The first Mummy sequel took place 10 years after the original. I could kind of buy that, it was a tiny little stretch to think 10 years had gone buy.
..but this movie takes place like 10 or 12 years AFTER The Mummy Returns, so now 20 odd years have passed since the original. Hard to buy. Also Fraser's hairpiece looks horrendous. The movie has no mummies as well, it has clay monsters, but they are called mummies every 2 minutes to remind the audience this is a Mummy movie.
Bello is also not 1/10th as charming as Evelyn as Weisz was. The villain's motives are constantly unclear, and the whole movie just never felt as thrilling or fun as the first two. As far as I am concerned the Mummy series has run it's course.
