Review of The Mummy Returns (2001) by Luis V — 29 Jul 2011
An adventure sequel waiting to be explored! We are back from the characters of The Mummy. Rick is back with a new adventure with his wife Evelyn and his son, Alex. Imhotep is back from the dead now the reclaim his position as ruler of the Earth. Imhotep's plan is now this to go to the Scorpion King's pyramid, kill the Scorpion King so that he may reclaim the Army of Anubis and take over the world. Yea, sounds cheesy, I know. The only people that can stop him, as you well know are the characters from the previous movie.
If you did not like the first movie, then you are going to hate the sequel. To all people, like me, loved the first movie are going to find this movie acceptable. The problem with most sequels is that there are parodies of the previous movie. All that we see on this movie is exactly alike of the previous movie. We have the same characters, we have the same antagonists, we have the same jokes, etc.! But I seriously enjoyed this movie because is fun to watch! Is exciting at it gets and never lets down your expectations. I didn't expected to watch a perfect adventure film like Indiana Jones, but I expected this film to entertain me and that's what it did. What I love this movie so much is the visual effects. All the visual effects from this movie work great! Especially on the scenes of the Army of Anubis, that was well-made visual effects!
Does the film have a storyline? Not so much because it is unoriginal and clichéd. We have the adventurous father, the boy that is the big troublemaker and we have the mother that cares about Egypt. Nothing new to see. Yes this movie has more action sequences than characters, but that what the movie is about. This movie is far away from dull and boring. Mind-blowing expectable! This film knows what it is doing and should be doing from us. Is the film worth watching? If you enjoy action and adventure, then you should watch this movie because is freaking awesome!
The performances in this movie were good and not hard striking as it is. All the fighting sequences are impressive, visually sophisticated, and it might remind you of watching a video game but you should not be so hard towards this movie because they are here to entertain us, not to give us a story. What I like about this film is that it is conclusive, like the previous movie, that way we don't expect a sequel so that the trilogy or saga doesn't get affect nor destroyed. I think this film is also funny to watch if you have a sense of humour.
What I did not like about his movie was the script. The script mostly failed to bring something new into the Mummy Franchise. It basically has the same old jokes and the same old catchphrases from the original film. The plot of this film was cheap, but thanks to the visual effects department, it saved it from becoming a complete and total disaster. These films, like Transformers, are made to make money and to have a great time while watching the movie. When we watch a movie for the first time, we don't criticize it; because we let our minds get into the movie and have fun. After watching the film or watching it for the second time we realize how good or terrible this movie is. Does this film have a morale or message? Nope, absolutely not, but the film has all the qualities to make this film look cool.
I recommend this movie to the people that appreciate loads of fun action visual effects in a movie. Is a film to be enjoyed, and not analyzed because you will find it difficult to enjoy. So go on ahead and enjoy this movie! The Mummy Returns, not how I wanted to, but it's still satisfactory.
