Review of The Mummy (2017) by K Nife C — 23 Jun 2017
Don't believe the hype. This movie sucks, but it doesn't even register on my worst of the year list. Universal Pictures has jumped onto the Marvel Disney bandwagon and is attempting to create an expanded universe film franchise based on the monsters that carved an indelible niche into the production studio's rich history.
The first entry is a sub-par Tom Cruise action vehicle that could easily find a home in a Blockbuster Video used DVD sale. It's better than "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back", it's worse than "Cocktail", but at least it's not painful.
As a sucker for new-age/Egyptian/secret society imagery, I was pleased that there's plenty of that aesthetic. Sadly, the rest of the visual pallet is comprised of desaturated blue/grey boringness.
Littered amongst the "Ringu"-esque zombies and violence is a lot of campy silliness and a throwaway romantic subplot. The movie is so middling that no one should care that it exists, much less hate it.
