Review of The Mummy (2017) by Carrie T — 18 Sep 2017
This movie is a droll start to what is supposed to be a shared universe that will be better off if they just pretend was never an idea in the first place. How, if the initial entry is a bad as this one, can you expect the next films to improve when people either will not watch or the reviews will eviscerate it since sequels and second films rarely get the same acclaim as firsts.
This was a mess from start. The story was lame, not developed well at all. The motivations were unclear for all parties. The links of the beginning to end were severed at best. Including, forcibly mind you, other characters that take away from the movie, is always a bad idea.
This would be like giving fans a Superman movie and for no reason at all, throwing another major character in with no connections to that character and forcing the audience to watch a nonsense connection be made.
The end was ambiguous at best, but it was also poorly done. No one wants to continue to watch this series of films if the opening act is as exciting as watching paint dry with about the same payoff.
