Review of The Mummy (2017) by Richard S — 16 Jan 2018
As you would expect from any Tom Cruise movie, the action and stunts are spectacular. However, this alone does not make a good movie. When he is not running around or on the receiving end of a Mummy smackdown Tom Cruise spends the rest of the movie just looking confused. He is probably wondering why he was cast as 10 minutes in, as much as I love a good Tom Cruise action movie, I immediately felt this was a wrong casting decision. Sofia Boutella does a fairly decent job as The Mummy of the title, with what she is given and Annabelle Wallis was wasted really in the love / hate relationship with Cruise's character. Russell Crowe makes an appearance as super brains Dr Jekyll who has a British geezer accent when he becomes scoundral Mr Hyde which worked but again I'm not totally sure Russell Crowe was the right man for the job. There were attempts at comedy which kind of felt flat and again that was down to the cast.
It's a shame because I had high hopes for this Dark Universe set up by Universal studios, they could have had a decent collection of classic adventure / horror movies in their hands. However, this puts me off any future additions.
