Review of The Mummy (2017) by Bfoore90 — 17 Jun 2017

Not as bad as most are making it out to be. Sofia Bouttella is the clear stand out in this film, she does well with the role she is given and delivers a truly terrifying/creepy vibe whenever she is on screen.

Some of the action scenes, especially the sand storm in London were also pretty cool and enjoyable. The movie does suffer from a bit of an identity crisis, almost mirroring that of Batman V Superman and Iron Man 2 before it as it by the time the credits roll feels like a Tom Cruise action flick than a Mummy movie and a potential franchise starter.

Also on the bad side, Annabelle Wallis was one of the most pointless aspects of this film. She and Tom Cruise share no chemistry, their relationship feels forced and Cruise acts circles around Wallis almost to the point as if I wondered if she was an extra that wandered onto the set.

There is enjoyment to be had here, it's a fun movie once it gets itself going but its just dragged down by stupid flaws that are usually common in movies that are potentially starting a franchise. I had heard reports that Tom Cruise forced studio changes and ran amok behind the scenes and onto the director which explains the identity crisis the film ultimately suffers from.

Overall, its a solid film but could have been better if Tom Cruise and the studio had stayed out of the production process.
