Review of The Mummy (2017) by Carol H — 10 Jun 2017
I enjoyed this. Not as good as the 1999 version but decent fun action/horror with a lot of cute classic monster references. I didn't know this was supposed to be part of a new shared universe, but you'd have to have never seen anything to do with classic horror to not recognize all the easter eggs.
The actual mummy villain compares favorably to the 1999 villain, and is a nice reworking of his girlfriend, if she were the mastermind. She also looks really great. In fact, although I find zombies a bit overdone lately and don't want to watch them onscreen, these zombies were more 'monster-y'--like some alien puppets, rather than gross corpses.
Russel Crowe was very funny. Perfect casting!
The film could have been better. It was almost a great love story and hinted at gaslight London style setpieces. At times it felt very much like a new take on An American Werewolf in London. The ending was a little rushed yet too long in parts. I did like the hero's answer for the conclusion. I'd be interested in seeing where this universe goes.
