Review of The Mummy (2017) by Ian S — 07 Jul 2017
Personally, I found this rendition of the mummy to be a perfect blend of a new world with some of the old world charm. The sets were well done, and the film itself kept its pace moving forward.
There was no short supply of action shots for sure, and despite my apprehension over Tom Cruise, he has made this film reboot a very pleasant experience. His role honestly could not have been played by anyone else.
I feel the people who were disappointed mostly approached this film wrong from the get go. Many thought it was going to be a restart of the Brendan Fraser series or the original Mummy. It was not, but it did provide imagery from its predecessors that gave some clues to the advancement of the new universe.
Universal is a fantastic studio with a lot of potential. For me, this film showed much of their potential. They allowed enough suspense and horror tactics to allow the Mummy to remain a family friendly film to an extent but sadly disappointed many who sought out to see this as a true horror film. Much of this is because of the advertising. A good amount of advertising was certainly missing from the film which did not help matters. Much of the advertising focused too heavily on Tom and not enough on Sophia. She played a spectacular Mummy.
One huge Complaint I have is not simply of this film but all films in the last few years. The same voice effect for any monster wether male or female is being reused way too much. When there is no difference between voices of monsters from one film franchise to another there is a serious problem.
