Review of The Mothman Prophecies (2002) by Tero H — 21 Jan 2009
I liked this bizarre thriller, it's not quite a horror flick nor a sci-fi movie. Richard Gere was suitable choice for this role, he had a leisure "air" around him yet seemed tormented enough for the film story. Laura Linney and Will Patton did great acting too.
It was indeed creepy, I watched it at night, yet it is very mysterious and intriguing film, intellectually. What was cool about this film was that there were actually multiple facets or sides to the story, which turn out or become clear with second or third watching. Yes, it gets better the more you watch it- and even though it is a bit slow, it manages to avoid being tedious. Were I not even remotely interested in any kind of mysteries or supernatural phenomena, then I might take two stars off my rating.
Another thought about this film. It doesn't have many special effects other than one, so it could have been a small-budget film with just fine acting. Too many films have just sfx and practically no plot whatsoever. So, I think this is worth watching, but twice, not once.
This film resembles 'Signs' in many ways, except that it has no children in it to take away the heavy melancholy and dark tones embedded in it. Recommended to be watched in the middle of the night for best effect.
