Review of The Mothman Prophecies (2002) by Gus S — 20 May 2008
This is definately a very creepy and underrated film. I remember this movie came and went upon its release, and generated no splash of any kind, so I figured it must be positively unremarkable, but the premise was intriguing enough to convince me to check it out. While Mark Pellington's music video roots are painfully noticable at times, he did a great job of creating a truly oppressive atmosphere in the movie, creating a sense of dread that I don't often get watching films.
Something that ruined the final act of this movie for me was the fact that I knew what the final disaster was going to be, which took the piss out of a lot of what was supposed to be suspenseful, so I ruined that for myself. A word of caution, the less you know about this movie going in, the better. Read up on it afterwards. I don't need to tell you that the "true story" element is pretty loose, but you can figure that out for yourself. I love being pleasantly surprised.
