Review of The Mothman Prophecies (2002) by Andrew D — 13 May 2012
Underrated, absorbing, and intense supernatural thriller. The director brilliantly uses cinematography, editing, and sound to convey a nightmarish atmosphere of dread. The direction can be a little overdone but is restrained when it comes to the horror aspect - Pellington never goes for the all-out scare, which is respectable but kind of disappointing. The tension builds to an unbearable degree but never releases. There aren't any huge reveals or explanations either. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it left me thoroughly creeped out. I can honestly say that even without "scares", it's more terrifying and chilling than most horror films that try too hard to scare you.
8.5/10.
