Review of The Mothman Prophecies (2002) by Eytan D — 27 Aug 2012
Based on the true story of the sightings of an alien moth-like creature in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, The Mothman Prophecies is one of the strangest, eeriest, most accurate and well-acted supernatural thrillers I have ever seen.
A story like this is meant to leave you with questions, and the film is scarier for the things you don't know. A great decision on director Mark Pellington's part, we never see the Mothman and we're not exactly sure whether he's trying to warn people of upcoming tragedies or cause some serious pain.
It all leads up to a nerve-shattering climax. Richard Gere and Laura Linney give great, naturally frightened performances. This kind of film is usually supposed to be cheesy. But instead, we got a brilliant "true story" horror smash that turned in something more terrifying than anything The X Files could have created.
