Review of The Mosquito Coast (1986) by Ashley H — 02 Aug 2007
When I saw this movie as a teenager I thought it was a pretty cool critique of American society and I identified with the River Phoenix character who enjoys the adventure of being dragged out with this family to a remote island by his old man.
Having just watched it again, I have a totally different take: Now, the father figure, Harrison Ford, comes off like the quintessential crack-pot American inventor who jeopardizes the safety of his family to pursue some narcissistic fantasy of living off the land.
It still holds up though, and its pro-environment/anti-immigrant message actually seems pretty relevant. Worth a revisit.
