Review of The Mosquito Coast (1986) by Jason M — 26 Nov 2007
This forgotten gem is definitely a feather in the caps of Peter Weir and Harrison Ford. Ford plays Allie Fox, a brilliant and eccentric inventor, who decides America is dying, so he decides to move his family to the Mosquito Coast, in Central America.
He buys a small town, and with his invention, a machine that makes ice from fire, he wants to bring civilization to the people. Ford's character is not a very likable guy, but Ford does manage to make the character oddly sympathetic.
As the paradise that Fox wants to create for his family is destroyed, Fox just can't face facts, and he destroys his family unit with his massive ego, that will not allow him to admit he is wrong.
The movie makes many interesting points about American expansionism, and although this may not be easy viewing, it is never less than compelling. A masterpiece.
