Review of The Monuments Men (2014) by Chris W — 06 Jan 2015

A muddled affair. The true story behind Monuments Men is unique and engaging, sadly the cinematic adaptation is neither. A stellar cast (clearly all doing pal George a favour) are utterly wasted with paper thin caricatures, who we never really develop any form of connection with.

But it's the film's tone that creates the biggest confusion. Is this a comedy? Well there's not really many laugh out loud moments. Is it a drama? It's a harrowing period, many people die, but over every poignant moment plays Desplat's whimsical score which tries to keep the film on a Dad's Army style footing.

So despite some great ingredients, The Monument's Men turns out to be a confused, unsatisfying picture.
