Review of The Monuments Men (2014) by Rob W — 05 Jun 2014
It was a little bit of a mess at times as it struggled to maintain both dramatic and comedic angles. The light/humorous parts were great, and the dramatic speeches were strong. But a lot of the movie did drag, especially the entire beginning.
And the cast chemistry wasn't as great as the trailer made it seem. One of the earlier trailers also made the film seem funnier than it really was. I enjoyed it for its story, which has been largely untold in respect to WW2.
I understand why they pushed back its theatrical release; I can sense Clooney was struggling in making this film what he envisioned in his head. Sadly, it probably didn't translate into film the way it was depicted in the book and in Clooney's head, resulting in a rather light film that tries to be something it never becomes.
With such a talented team behind the film, I do wish it was better.
