Review of The Monuments Men (2014) by Ray H — 22 Jun 2014
This movie had some entertaining moments. The story was OK. We have a cast of veteran actors who all perform very well. There are scenes that are gently funny. There is some dramatic tension; but we are not too worried. We know our guys will succeed in the end.
But, the movie was written following a standard Hollywood template.. The overall theme was very familiar. We have a mis-matched group of reluctant heroes. They are tasked with saving as much priceless art from the clutches of evil Nazis as possible. They strive against overwhelming odds. There are moments of lite humor to lift the mood. The Nazis from Central Casting are suitably evil looking and acting. We know some of our hero group will probably not make it. In the end, against all manner of adversity, the group is successful. And, the credits roll.
It was fun to watch some of the well known actors play off against each other. But, all of those little moments did not add up to a satisfying movie experience. You might want to catch this film on late nite TV or streaming video.
