Review of The Monuments Men (2014) by Alexandru S — 12 Aug 2014
A movie based on true events towards the end of World War II about the hunt for missing works of art which had been quite literally looted by the Nazis.
For a movie that had such potential I was left underwhelmed for the first hour at least by George Clooney's lacklustre direction and for what can only be described as a glorified episode of the BBC comedy Dad's Army.
Except the subject matter isn't comedy at all and men gave their lifes in finding some of the artwork.
I did think to myself at times was such work worth the ultimate sacrifice and I am yet to convince myself otherwise.
I like the genre of WW2 films but I was let down by the scope of this movie even compared to war films from the last decade such as Inglorious Basterds and Valkyrie.
Bill Murray plays one of the rag tag Monuments Men in the only serious role I can recall him having?
