Review of The Monuments Men (2014) by Tyler R — 06 Sep 2014
Not quite sure where all the hate is coming from for this film. One of the knocks against it is the overly nostalgic tone, but isn't that what made Captain America: The First Avenger and The Rocketeer so good? There's nothing wrong with nostalgia.
The Monuments Men follows a group of experts in history and art as they cross enemy lines to find and secure the masterpieces before the Nazis destroy them. It isn't hard to see a strong Ocean's Eleven vibe coming out of the banter and some of the scenes, which makes sense since George Clooney is behind and in front of the camera, but with Matt Damon this time.
The acting is pretty great, especially given the diverse cast, and their chemistry and banter is great. The story does slog a tad bit in the middle, and there are times when the tone bounces around a little bit, never really finding it's footing.
But other than that, the acting and the incredible attention to detail in recreating World War II is exciting to watch, paving the way for an entertaining film.
