Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Timothy D — 27 Nov 2009
With director Fred Dekker, he did not just give us only one of THE best 80's horror comedies of ALL time (Night of the Creeps), he gave us two of these films, and the other one is The Monster Squad.
The Monster Squad is about a gang of youngster horror fanatics who band together when Count Dracula himself rises and builds an army of famous monsters (Frankenstein's monster, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Wolfman) in order to take over the world.
Naturally, the parents are no help, so the kids build their own little squad (via classic usage of 80's montage and background music). The end result is a completely over-the-top movie that's fun, corny, and very entertaining.
A true classic from my childhood that STILL manages to be awesome to this day. Are you a fan of the movie Van Helsing? Well, guess what? You're a fucking moron and you need to shoot yourself. The Monster Squad gets it done and it gets it done much better than Van Helsing ever could.
No overabundance of CGI, lack of storytelling, moronic celebrities, etc. Some familiar faces may include Jon Gries (Napoleon Dynamite, The Rundown, TV's Martin) as the Wolfman in human form, and cult actor Tom Noonan (Manhunter, Last Action Hero, The Roost) as Frankenstein's monster in a nice, touching role.
Excellent film that was shamelessly released on DVD and Blu-ray only recently. I hope more people discover the greatness and charm to this film. Classic stuff.
