Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Jeremy S — 24 Aug 2008
The insensitivity for obesity, the xenophobia, the homophobia, the sexual blackmail, the corny music, the whitewashed cast... No, it's not the religious right - it's the Monster Squad, and they're not afraid to kick below the belt.
It's 1987, and Dracula, the Mummy, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon have all returned from hell to kill a few kids and retrieve an ancient amulet with magical powers.
Little do they know they'll be going up against the Monster Squad, a group of 12-year-old fiend-fighters who aren't about to take any crap from a few crusty horror-flick hellions. You haven't seen anything this scary and laughable since the Republican primaries.
