Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Richard A — 28 Oct 2008
Surprisingly a lot of people are not familiar with this kids based horror/comedy. I remember it well from my childhood and it still holds a candle strong today. I have a feeling Monster Squad got lost in the shuffle somewhere between Goonies and The Lost Boys and didn't receive as much noteriety.
I'm glad to see it got a proper anniversary release on DVD so it can be enjoyed at its highest level. Its sort of a family film but also crosses questionable lines with adult themed horror elements but compared to today's violence standards its pretty tame.
Great film, great looking classic horror monsters, the kid actors are a treat to watch, Frankenstein steals the show (a well made up Tom Noonan, the "toothfairy in Manhunter) and its all good entertainment value. I just watched it recently and enjoyed it as much as I did years back.
