Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Manfred O — 05 May 2010
Way ahead of it's time, It wouldn't suprise me if guys like JJ Abrams & Joss Whedon were inspired by this cult hit & it's mix of Horror/Dramedy/Action. The villains such as Dracula play it straight not camp. When was the last time you saw the most famous vampire calmly snapping necks , driving a ghostly hearse & indulging in a penchant for explosives?. This movie has a real world gravitas due to having elements such as having a Holocaust Victims, Married Couples Fighting Realistically & even the Frankenstein's Monster existing in a world where he is a famous pop culture icon. Even the kids come off as they are from genuine 80s surburbia & not Spielbergian child stereotypes. Loads of fun with some scares thrown in, I'm glad Monster Squad has endured the test of time. If you want a movie to bond with your kids, nephews/nieces over Or maybe just to take a trip back to a time before movies were reliant on CGI (This has none) & incorporated political correctness into films with kids in them, then this chumpie is For You. Rediscover The Magic. 4 Stars.
