Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Ian S — 23 Oct 2010
Enjoyable, well-written (Shane Black also wrote Lethal Weapon), knowingly daft 80s romp throws the classic Universal monsters in with the Goonies - it's just as good as the Goonies for me, if not better, on a considerably smaller budget.
The plot is slight, and it hasn't aged particularly well, but then few films from this era have. Some decent Stan Winston creature effects here too - though the Wolf Man looks worryingly like Lionel Blair.
Showing the same goofy throwback feel as Dekker's previous film Night Of The Creeps, this is a bona fide bottom-shelf classic. It even has an ultra-dated rap tune over the end credits which recaps the plot.
