Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Nick C — 12 Feb 2011
Saw this when I was a kid and I fucking loved it. Hadn't seen it since and watching it again, it turns out that it's pretty awfull. I'm not sure what part Shane Black played in writing this but my hope is that he wrote a script that was deemed too awesome and as such was re-written and destroyed by Fred Drekker who turned it into this lame, charmless piece of shit.
Not funny or clever or cool or scary or anything. It's just shit. And it features a very out of place and inappropriate attempt at social commentary with the old Jew replying to the kid who says that he sure knows a lot about monsters, by saying: 'Yes, I suppose I do.' Before the camera zooms in to show off the badly scrawled fading numbers tatooed on his arm.
All that said the premis is still gold and this shit is ripe for an awesome re-make.
