Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Ian B — 19 Nov 2011
I don't think there was a film I watched more as a child than The Monster Squad (ok, maybe Ghostbusters), and I'm amazed how well it still holds up. It's basically the Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters, but it works surprisingly well.
Yeah, it's filled with numerous plot holes, bad one liners, and more 80's cheese than you can handle. But, it's apart of my childhood dammit, and that nostalgia factor makes me overlook all the shortcomings of the movie.
At 80 minutes there's not really time for character or story development, but with a movie like this do you really need it? The monsters look amazing and are thankfully played straight, while the kid's performances are touch and go.
The Monster Squad is a huge staple of growing up in the 80's and I'll forever laugh my ass of whenever I hear "Wolfman's got nards". After a long, long wait the movie is finally out on DVD.
So get off your ass and go re-live your childhood.
