Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Johnathon W — 04 Nov 2013
Charming kids film that still holds up thanks to a likable cast & a sense of fun from the filmmakers. It has aged a bit, especially the digital effects, though the practical creature effects hold up thanks to the brilliant work by Stan Winston.
The plot is a bit thin (the amulet is a classic McGuffin) but funny writing (Shane Black is a credited writer) & a story that the monsters seriously helps. No cheap kid tricks to take down these creatures but stakes, bullets & dynamite (this is a PG-13).
Great film for the monster fan in all of us, if for nothing else than to see all these classic characters on screen at once.
