Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Joel J — 27 Oct 2008
I liked this movie better tha first time I saw it. WHEN IT WAS CALLED THE GOONIES!!!! To be fair, I probably would have loved this film when I was twelve, but it just didn't do that much for me this time around. Don't get me wrong, there more than enough cute moments to keep your attention. I just had too high of expectations going in, I guess. Having all the classic horror villains together in one film was pretty imaginative, but some were just highly under used (especially Gill Man/Creature From the Black Lagoon). Fred Dekker did a decent job directing the kids (which is difficult as hell I hear), and Andre Gower is really animated as the fearless leader. If you like 80's movies sheerly because they are 80's movies, you will probably get a good chuckle out of this one. If it is horror that you seek, search somewhere else.
-6.
Ps - If you have kids that are eight or older, they will LOVE this film.
