Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Ryan W — 12 Jul 2015
This film has been called "'The Goonies' for the working man," or something to that effect. A surprising blend of immature, but witty quips, sight gags, climactic battles, and suprisingly tender moments make this a solid children's movie, but it's the deconstruction of classic monster lore and other finer details that earns this its cult status.
Arguments about the day-to-day life of Wolfman ("Wolfman doesn't have a day job; I mean, he doesn't, like, drive around in a car or something." "Yeah, but he wears pants!"), homages to James Whales' classic "Frakenstein," making silver bullets and wooden stakes in shop class, and (intentionally?) bad one-liners (As Dracula blows up the treehouse headquarters of the Monster Squad, "Meeting Adjourned!") make this a can't-miss 80s Saturday night classic.
