Review of The Monster Squad (1987) by Khristie A — 06 Oct 2011
The Monster Squad is like The Goonies VS the Universal Monsters. Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and Gill-man (what, no Invisible Man?) all clash with a group of horror movie fans and it's probably one of the best movies you could make with its premise.
For a film I think is aimed towards kids, there's a healthy amount of gore; and how can you have all of these titans of horror cinema without a little blood? The makeup and special effects are great; all of the monsters look like colorized versions of the Universal characters.
The Gill-Man in particular looks great, but very little is done with him. The Monster Squad is awesome, short and sweet, and a remake or sequel is welcome... and I'm a bit shocked to find out this movie is not made by Universal Studios considering the loving homages to the classic Monsters.
