Review of The Monster (2016) by Chris F — 22 Nov 2016
The Monster is a fine horror movie from the director of The Strangers. The performances in this film are really good. Zoe Kazan shines as a mother who has a strained relationship with her daughter. The little girl in this film is also really good in her role.
The film really depends on their relationship, and for the most part it works. You see their relationship through flashbacks. They allowed you to care about these characters, even though they aren't the most likable.
The film falters, though, when it comes to the monster itself. The monster isn't particularly scary. I wasn't as terrified as I should've been. As a horror film, the film should've been more frightening.
The film does make up for it through its characters. Overall, this is an enjoyable horror movie that focuses on the characters more than the scares.
