Review of The Monster (2016) by Ruby S — 06 Apr 2017
I love it. Some people might say it's dog shit, but that's because they have a weak mind and don't see the actual message.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*.
Basically the movie is about a girl *_-Lizzy-_* with a mother *_-Kathy-_* who was hooked on drugs and hung round with the wrong people.
Lizzy saw Kathy as a 'monster'. Kathy tried to change herself, but always failed. She told Lizzy promises that she never kept, and told her things that came out to be wrong.
~Kathy and Lizzy had a broken relationship (car crash symbolizes that).
~Kathy tried to comfort Lizzy but it never lasted long because of Kathy's alcohol (them getting terrorized by the monster).
~Other people who got involved to help them never succeeded (the guy _Jesse_ and the ambulance symbolize that).
~They take the ambulance (get help) but it is wrecked by the monster (when they flash back to the night Kathy searched for alcohol in the trash, she broke the "drug free" day streak that Lizzy made).
~In a time of desperation, Kathy decides to save Lizzy from the monster by sacrificing herself (but she is also the monster and she is trying to save Lizzy from herself/Kathy).
~When Lizzy sees that Kathy has changed and is fighting the monster for Lizzy's sake, she realizes that she isn't afraid of the monster anymore (she isn't scared of her mother anymore).
~When Lizzy throws her teddy to distract and defeat the monster, she is throwing her childhood away to stand up to the monster.
~Also when Lizzy puts the knife to Kathy's throat when she's sleeping, indicates the fact that Lizzy tried to kill the monster before, but didn't do it until later. The monster was trying to consume Lizzy but she stopped it (on both occasions).
The movie is amazing, and it's so complex that I'm surprised they actually managed to pull it off so well. It's sad that people don't actually look deeper into the meaning of "The Monster".
*ENDING SCRIPT EXPLAINED*.
_You are gonna be so much better than me... so much better._.
_You just wait and see, it's gonna be amazing._.
_You are gonna get past me..._.
_And you are gonna be able to do whatever you want._.
*(This is where the mother has changed and the monster inside the mother is defeated)*.
_I just want you._ *(Lizzy begins to love her mother instead of hating because she saw how much her mother cared for her and gave up her life for her.)*.
_"Lizzy" my mom tells me..._ _"There's no such thing as monsters"._.
_But she is wrong._.
_They are out there, waiting for you..._.
_watching._.
_They are in the dark._.
_Sometimes where you see them..._.
_Sometimes where you don't._.
_I know that now._.
_I'm not afraid anymore._.
*(Lizzy is referring to humans, not creatures. Her final speech is during the time when she's going out into the light, after the monster is defeated, signifying her leaving the darkness in her life and beginning to live in the light.)*.
So in short, this movie is a metaphor of Kathy and her relationship with Lizzy, and Lizzy's journey into the light. (Sure was a bumpy one, eh).
I apologise if I wasn't clear with some points and that it's so long... It's just the fact that I'm not good with explaining things and this movie is too complex for me to put the meaning of it in words.
Peace. ?
