Review of The Mole People (1956) by Dead-Head M — 11 Mar 2008
I've been trying to see the quaint charm that I always assumed made B-horror films attractive, but I just can't figure it out. Maybe I've been watching the wrong ones... But I could see the appeal of something that was "camp" because of an artificiality, banality, or lack of sophistication.
.. but to be so, I thought it had to be self-aware, which, to my knowledge, many B-films aren't. I could also see enjoying a B-film because it had the charm of being under-produced. But I can't see the appeal of a lack of financial backing and production effort producing terrible scripts with outworn stock characters for poorly shot and ultimately boring films, whose only redeemable quality (for me) is to provide fodder for MST3K.
Maybe someday I can sit down with someone who understands these things much better than I. Until then, I fear becoming someone who appreciates B-horror only for their parodic potential.
