Review of The Mist (2007) by Justin A — 29 Jun 2015
The only thing people talk about when it comes to this movie is the ending. It's difficult to even talk about the rest of the movie when the ending has such a huge impact that it almost blanks out everything that precedes it. I am fine with the ending, but I didn't like it much either. I didn't hate it like some people did and I didn't love it like others. I thought it was okay for where the direction trying to take the movie, but it just leaves too much of a sour taste for my liking. I just wasn't completely satisfied.
That said, a lot of the grocery store aspect of the movie is pretty good and a lot of fun. The pharmacy scene is especially creepy and Marcia Gay Harden as the fear-mongering bible thumper is an overlooked performance. Maybe a bit too Margaret White (from Carrie), but it works and it feels very Stephen King-esque (I never read The Mist, so I don't know the accuracy of this movie). All the panic and fear-mongering in the store is what makes the movie a lot of fun. The monster action and gore almost seems like an afterthought most of the time.
I enjoyed The Mist, but others may have a hard time with it, especially because of the ending. I would definitely recommend it though.
