Review of The Missouri Breaks (1976) by Mike G-Man G — 25 Jul 2008
One of 1976's most notorious boxoffice bombs and largely critically drubbed at the time, this oddball western is (judging from many of the other reviewers here) being seen in an entirely new light.
It's quite possible that the handful of people who bothered to see it back in the day didn't know what to make of a western so non-traditional. Punctuated by sudden, shocking violence and unexpected humor, it has an offbeat sensibility that, despite the film's sometimes too leisurely pace, keeps things unpredictable and the viewer off balance.
Jack Nicholson is at his laid-back best and Brando's character is one of his strangest creations, it must be seen to be believed. Plenty of recognizable character actors fill out the cast. I don't know if I'd call it a classic, but it surely is one of the most original takes on a western that I've seen.
Great cinematography and music score as well. Worth a watch if you're a fan of westerns and/or are in the mood for something different.
