Review of The Mission (1986) by Kyle K — 15 Jul 2008
Jeremy Irons gives a strong performance alongside Deniro as one of two intrepid missionaries in South America. A fascinating story about faith, doubt, pacifism and the dynamics of force. The cinematography conspires beautifully to capture the dense humid interior of the Brazilian jungles, the inherent beauty and innocence of the Native American Indians themselves, to leave a haunting impression of their now almost extinct world of simplicity and untouched purity.
An emotionally engaging drama set against an inspirational musical score from Ennio Morricone. Highly recommended viewing.
