Review of The Mission (1986) by Alex D — 01 Jul 2018
The first two thirds of this movie are sublime. The acting is great. The cinematography is great. The script is perfectly austere. In the last third, the film becomes a typical Hollywood action-drama. As the screen fades, an absurd text appears upon the screen that expects you to have been convinced (by this film, supposedly) that Jesuits helped the indigenous peoples of Latin America "keep their culture.
" It was probably placed their by an ignorant studio executive. This film bears the marks of too many hands. Frustratingly flawed and ideologically naive.
