Review of The Misfits (1961) by Arin D — 29 Nov 2008
A paean to the Old West, this film has several levels of metonymy - ending with the allegory of the mustangs as the spirit of the West without it becoming a cliche. Clark Gable's cowboy character calls them 'misfit horses'.
Also a close character study like they used to do in the golden age, Eli Wallach, Montgomery Clift and Gable all orbit as different aspects of Western masculinity around Monroe's city girl star. Monroe looks voluptuous and yet fragile and if you had only seen her in her technicolor comedic roles, this will really open your eyes.
Very epic, very necessary to watch. It's one of my father's favorite films, and now also mine.
