Review of The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996) by Lady M — 01 Feb 2011
This whole movie is a mixed bag. For every good thing there's an equally awful thing. Bridges' character is tired of relationships where sex is the only thing that matters, so he opts for a sexless marriage of convenience with Streisand, but she is secretly in love with him.
In the end, vanity prevails and Streisand ditches frumpy and goes for gussied up and wins back the man. Typical rom-com shtick, but it is endearing at points. Its often bold approach to modern relationships and gender roles is ultimately drowned out by formulaic dialogue and a clichéd narrative.
Streisand directs, but her effort isn't as memorable as "Yentl" or "The Prince of Tides". What makes the film so likeable in the end is the performances from Barbra Streisand and film legend Lauren Bacall.
It's no secret that I have an unhealthy obsession with Streisand and a mild love affair with Lauren Bacall, but I didn't let that cloud my opinion of the film. Another bonus is the love theme of the movie, performed by Streisand and Bryan Adams.
It's one of my personal favourites. "The Mirror Has Two Faces" is a must-see if you're a Streisand fan, but otherwise I'd suggest not going out of your way to watch this.
