Review of The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996) by Stephen M — 22 Mar 2008
Ooops.
That's what I want to say about this self indulgent and silly movie.
But what I have to say is that there are actually valid thoughts behind it. The thoughts about the unwilling hurt our parents inflict upon us and overcoming that pain; the heaps of trouble caused by judgements based on physical appearance; the complications of relationships (not just marriages but with family members and friends). There actually is something behind this film which does have some serious oops ness about it.
I espeically love seeing the campus of Columbia University, the New York scenery, the great acting of Lauren Bacall and Mimi Rogers (and any of Brenda Vaccaro, who should work more, really). There is some clever dialogue and some heartwarming scenes. Jeff Bridges is pretty and so is Barbra ( though looking silly in several scenes near the end, when she looks more like a hooker than she did when she PLAYED a hooker).
It's not a great movie and, definately, not her best; but Rose is very likeable -- for most of the movie. And Streisand is really honest in some of the more poignant scenes.
It's based on a french film I haven't seen. Maybe I should.
