Review of The Minus Man (1999) by Mike M — 10 Dec 2007
The first ten minutes offer Sheryl Crow as an asthmatic junkie, and it's all unusual and surprising from there on in. A slower pace in the second half exposes its flaws: Fancher isn't much of a visualist, and the script seems forever to be reaching for something more serious than the tone of black comedy it operates in.
But Wilson, employing the same drawled line readings with which he would later make his name as a comedian, is unexpectedly convincing as a killer with a philosophical bent, determined to keep a cool head while others around him are losing theirs.
If more people had gone to see this upon its American release, recent cinema history could have been very different indeed.
