Review of The Mighty Macs (2011) by Jason M — 27 Oct 2011
The Mighty Macs.
Initial Reaction: Does this have to do with MacBeth or MacGuyver?
Main Characters.
Cathy Rush: She's the new head coach of a girls' basketball team played by Carla Gugino.
Mary Margaret O'Malley: She's Cathy's assistant played by Lauren Bittner.
Plot Summary.
It is 1971, and Cathy is taking on her job as head coach of an all girls basketball team in a small Catholic School. The team in in shambles, the school is low on funds, and the court is a mess.
But Cathy is determined to turn these girls from floor mats to winners - an perhaps get a championship along the way.
SCORING.
Main Characters.
Cathy's okay - I like that she has fire and desire to win, and that she is willing to push her players to the breaking point in order to get her goals.
As for Mary, she's not as good as the assistant. She just seems to blend in with the background too much. SCORE: 5.
Supporting Cast.
The team of players that Cathy coaches are far too alike - they took one character model and made many copies of that model in order to fill out the team.
The rest of the cast isn't that memorable either - even with the head woman of the Catholic school trying her best to make waves. SCORE: 3.
Plot.
The interaction between Cathy and the girls is fun to watch, but the path the film takes is far too obvious. I knew where the film was going far before the film went there. The ending was so obvious that when it did happen, I felt no real joy or the urge to stand up and cheer for Cathy and her team. SCORE: 3.
Originality.
This is your average, run of the mill, underdog sports story. There's nothing new or fresh on display here. SCORE: 2.
Violence Factor.
The basketball is played fairly, and there are no physical altercations between any of the girls on any teams. SCORE: 8.
Other Moral Issues.
This film is all about turning a bunch of girls into a strong team, but that's been done better in other films.
And I have no idea why they had a scene where the Mary gets a little too close and personal while playing basketball against a teenaged boy. SCORE: 3.
Final Score (out of 60): 24 % Score: 40%.
Just because it's based on a true story doesn't mean it is going to be good. The film needs a better plot and supporting characters.
